Abstract

Although society pays a good deal of attention nowadays to the needs of the handicapped, very few books for young children serve to heighten awareness and increase sympathy by tackling the theme of personal handicaps. A research group at the University of Quebec at Hull, after checking 3447 French books designed for children under 5, found allusions to this theme in only 34 books. The authors recommend 12 of these (8 fiction, 4 non-fiction) to libraries.
